Choosing Chinese Baby Names
Picking out Chinese baby names is a lot of fun but it can also be a lot of work. Expectant Chinese parents are no different than those in the west when it comes to choosing names. They will take time to research and go through baby name dictionaries and try to find a name that both honors the family and is unique to the child.
The Chinese zodiac plays an important role in the choosing of the name, perhaps the most important role. What time, what year, what season, etc. All come into play. The Chinese believe that the zodiac will determine what type of person their child will be. Finding a name that corresponds to the traits that they believe the child will grow into is crucial part of that child’s life.
Picking out a child’s name before they are born is considered very bad luck. It is not uncommon for the parents to reference the kid as an animal or as something impure while still in womb. This is done in order to keep the spirits from kidnapping the unborn.
There is another tradition that is a little different in Chinese culture. That is to give a baby an informal infant name. The name is used in the family to refer to the baby. It is a sort of nickname for a child that is used until they are old enough to be start being addressed by their formal name. The infant name is not considered as important to the parents, and so can be something that is somewhat degrading or seems to give the child little importance.
Family Chinese surnames and genealogy play an important role in naming children. Generally, the middle name of the child will correspond to other middle names of children born within that generation. The last name will be the same from generation to generation. This is to help create a sort of family tree within each name of each member of the family. The Chinese value the traits of their ancestors and honor them through the naming of the new born.
In addition to the importance the calendar plays in choosing a name, there are several factors that go into the choice. Many names will relate to gender traits. The characters for beauty, elegance, or virtue are often found in Chinese baby girls names. The characters for power, glory or knowledge are often found in boys names.
Picking out new Chinese baby names may seem a bit more tricky than choosing an American name. The rich tradition of the country, though, makes the selection process something that everyone can understand. Although the customs may vary from country to country, all parents want everything to be the best for their children, including their names.
