Daisy Chain Education
Wouldn’t it be great to have an activity to do with your children that is always new, but reinforces learning skills with repetition? What if that same activity provided your children with precious memories of time spent knitting their hearts to your own?
Making chains and garlands of flowers can accomplish this and more. Little boys will use these skills one day to show a young woman she is special. A daughter will feel like a princess with a crown upon her head.
For this project, you will need flowers with sturdy stems. Some of the flowers that work well for this include: asters, black-eyed Susan, daisies, globe amaranth, red clover, zinnias, bachelor buttons, chrysanthemums, dandelions, marigolds, and tithonia.
Practice counting skills as you collect 25 to 30 flowers. Take the pile of flowers and help your child sort them into equal piles. Sorting can also be done by color or by size. Repetition is the key to learning these skills.
This project also presents an opportunity to learn plant identification. Do you know which plants are good to eat? What are other uses? What are the parts of the flower? Help your child identify the stamen and the pistil in the flower. The pistil is the name for the style, ovary and stigma combined.What are their functions? The ideas are endless.
Children develop fine motor skills by pulling the flower heads firmly and gently. You child’s eye-hand coordination can be enhanced as he reaches for the moving blossoms.
Find a cozy spot to sit with your child and demonstrate how to cut a slit just below the flower’s head using your thumb nail. Pick up another flower and place its stem through the opening. Then pierce a hole into the second flower’s stem, below the flower’s head. Let your child help place the third stem through the second flower’s stem. Fine motor skills will be re-enforced with this exercise.
Continue this process until you’ve created a chain of flowers long enough to encircle your wrist, neck or head. On the last stem, create an opening large enough to slide the first flower through. Use the last stem to tie a knot. The excess ends can then be woven into your garland or trimmed away.
Place the finished wreath upon your head or upon your child’s head and exclaim, “Won’t Daddy be so proud!”
To your child, you just spent time with them, showed them how to make floral decorations and had a great time. Botany, color identification, sorting, and counting are a few of the things you will have taught your child while showing him how to concentrate and complete a task. All of these are valuable learning tools that every child needs, but your child will gain them while hearing you teach him songs, tell him funny stories and wonder at God’s creation.
