How can I convert Tatting, Board Lacing and Knitting patterns into Crochet patterns?
REmember that crochet has a different “hand” or feel to it, as well as a different amount of give than the techniques given.
That said – the tatting patterns can usually be reproduced using a combination of chaining and single crochet. you will make the ring with your chain, then go back over the ring with single crochet stitches that cover the chain (Don’t work into the chain – work over it)
Knitting patterns are in part about shape — if you have a template or paper pattern that tells you the measurememnts and shape of the garment pieces, then you will then work your crochet stitches to fit into that shape. you will get a more “knit like” garment, if you work side to side, instead of up and down. you will also get a more rib like finish if you use a ribbed single crochet.
Remember that crochet tends to be heavier and a bit stiffer than knit, so you will need to use a slightly lighter yarn and slightly larger
hook to get a softer hand.
By board lacing – do you mean bobbin lacing?
you can get the look of bobbin lace to some degree with crochet and there are many patterns already out there (A lot of beautiful vintage stuff can be found, if you search under “vintage crochet patterns 1900s” Dover has some great reprints as well.
If you have a particular style of bobbin lace you want, such as belgian or cluny, you may have to experiment.
It would be best to get a book that explains in detail all of the different crochet sitiches.
Then sketch out the design you want. Work on creating the different components of the lace and then crochet those components together.
Essentially that is how Irish lace began — it was an attempt to replicate the look of bobbin lace with a crochet hook. try looking up Irish lace. Piecework had a great article on it some years ago, and if you go to Interweave press you can still purchase back issues and individual articles.
