Top 5 Reasons for Cotton Baby Clothes

Cotton is a wonderful product for baby apparel, along with baby bedding and linens.  Why would you put any other fabric next to your little one’s delicate skin?  Dress your precious baby in comfort and style while having ease of care for yourself, they also make great baby gifts!

1.   Comfort for the baby

Cotton is soft and comfortable against a baby’s delicate skin; this might be why they enjoy it so much!  Cotton breathes, meaning that it absorbs and then quickly releases perspiration. If the baby is wrapped in a fabric, such as synthetic fabrics, that do not breathe, they can become sweaty and overheat.  By using cotton, their body moisture is absorbed and their temperature is regulated.  Absorbency is especially important for diapers, but also for soft towels to dry your baby after bath time.  Cotton can absorb 24-27 times its own weight.

2.   Cotton is a natural fiber!

Cotton is a natural fiber and thereby non allergenic.  Chemically treated fabrics can give off small particles that might aggravate a baby’s allergies.  Many countries cultivate cotton, meaning it is plentiful and has many uses. The cultivation of cotton is not labor intensive, thereby making it inexpensive.  Since cotton is biodegradable, it also helps our environment!

3.   Durability

Cotton is a tough fiber.  Fabric made from cotton will last longer than synthetic ones.  Babies are hard on their clothes, because they often have stubborn stains, such as baby food.  Cotton releases dirt readily and only needs a warm water wash.  Cotton will come clean with a mild soap.  No need for strong detergents or chemicals that may irritate baby’s sensitive skin.  Cotton can even be boiled if you want to sterilize it.

4.    Versatility

Cotton fabric comes in a variety of weights and weaves.  There are many uses for cotton, such as home furnishings, industrial applications, bedding, and apparel.  As for baby clothes, the versatility of cotton enables the fibers to be woven into fabric or spun into a variety of yarns suitable for infant use which can be knitted or crocheted into a wonderfully soft baby layette, sweater, or bonnet .

5.    Fashionable

Cotton is easy to work with!  It does not ravel as easily as many other fabrics, and are also easy to dye.  Cotton takes up dyes easily where dyeing large quantities in vats or small pieces by hand at home.  With the absorption rate of dyes we can have every color, tint, or shade we want.  Baby apparel originally was commonly dyed in mostly pastels.  Today designers are also creating baby apparel in bright, vivid colors, such as the primary colors, red, blue, and yellow.  A baby onesie is a favorite piece of apparel and it is made from knitted cotton in a variety of weights.  There are short-sleeved baby onesies in bright yellow for summer apparel, to soft pink and baby blue heavy weight sleepers for cold nights.
