Marker Knitting

Marker Knitting
knitting question about markers?

when a pattern calls for markers where do i place them so they continue into the next rows?
this is a portion of the pattern i am working from..

Next Row: *Work in Seed St over 10 sts, place marker; rep from *.
Next Row (RS): *P2 tog, (k1, p1) to 2 sts before marker, k2tog; rep from * to end of row – 72 (80, 88) sts.
Next Row: *K1, p1; rep from *.
Next Row: *K2tog, (p1, k1) to 2 sts before marker, p2tog – 54 (60, 66) sts.
Next Row: *P1, k1; rep from *. Remove markers.

after the first row of markers it does not tell me to place them again. i was under the impression i just place them on the needle and take them off as i come to them. is this right or wrong? and can you tell me how to go about using them for this pattern.

Once a marker is placed, it remains there in the same position on the needle row after row until it is no longer needed. So when you come to a marker, simply slip it from the left needle to the right needle, and keep going.

— edited to add — (because I didn’t read all the way through the question, argh)

For the first row you listed, you are going to place a marker on the needle after every 10th stitch. You work seed stitch for 10 stitches and place a marker. Then you repeat everything between the two asterisks which means another 10 in seed stitch and then another marker.

In this case, the markers are being placed to help you keep track of the individual repeat sections.

So in the second row, dealing with just the first 10 stitches (ie the first repeated section), you’ll
p2tog, p1, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1, k2tog and then slip the marker from the left needle to the right.

The parentheses also mean “repeat.” In this case, they are telling you to start with a p2tog, then repeat the alternating p1, k1 until there are two stitches left before the marker and then k2tog those last two stitches. You’ll do it all over again with the next section (the next 10 stitches between two markers).

Let me make sure we’re talking about the same kind of markers. A marker is some sort of loop or ring that hangs on the actual needle. It is not attached to the knitting itself. (In crochet the markers ARE attached to the fabric, but in knitting they are NOT.) So that ring or loop is hanging there on the needle nestled between two stitches.

You can make your own markers by making rings of scrap yarn, clipping slices off a drinking straw to make little hoops, using safety pins large enough to fit the needle through, etc., or you can purchase commercially available stitch markers.
