Buying a Good Set of Sewing Tools
When buying sewing tools, there are actually 5 main categories you need to consider. This includes:
- Measuring
- Cutting
- Marking
- Pressing
- Sewing
The five categories should be complete to ensure a smooth sewing activity. Sewing tools doesn’t merely comprise of a pair of scissors, a needle and a thread. You need to have the tools necessary for the above mentioned categories in your sewing kit.
When buying such tools for sewing, you also need to consider the type of tools and their quality. The right choices can produce the best sewn or repaired pieces of clothing.
Tools for sewing lie needles, pins, tape measures are also known as “notions”. Knowing this will help you a lot the next time you drop by a fabric store. You can now head over to the right direction and avoid annoying the sales personnel with too many questions. Just keep in mind that whatever sewing tools you are planning to buy, having one for each category can help you achieve a professional finish.
When measuring.
As you well now, the first step to any sewing project is measuring. You also know that with accurate measurements, you can have better results. The rule of thumb for measuring is: measure twice but cut only once. For accurate measurements, you would need the following:
- Tape measure
- See-through rulers
- Seam gauge
When marking.
This is the part where you draw a straight line you can follow or where you can put spots for the buttons. You need to put markings on the fabric. Some of the special tools you need are:
- Chalk
- Pens
When cutting.
You can’t cut fabric to achieve the shape you need without a good pair of cutting tools. These should be precise and sharp. A good tip to keep them in excellent condition is to only use them in your sewing projects and not for other tasks such as trimming shrubs or cutting paper. Tools you would need for this project include:
- Shears
- Scissors
- Rotary cutters
- Cutting mats
- Seam ripper
When pressing.
In order for your project to look professional, you need to apply some pressure. For amazingly crisp and clean edges, they should have well-pressed seams. Tools you can use for pressing are the following:
- Ironing board
- Steam iron
- Pressing cloths
- Rolls & hams
When sewing.
Of course, for sewing projects, you need a good set of sewing tools. Mind you, this should not be limited to pins, threads and needles only. You need other important tools. These should be of good quality. This includes:
- Hand sewing needles
- Sewing machine needles
- Thread
- Needle threader
- Pin cushions and pins
