The beautiful Flokati area rugs began their journey as winter coats first used in Greece. Woven as coats for protection from the cold winter winds, the earliest use of Flokati design were stated to be around the 5th century. By 1960 the same principle was applied to make commercial Flokati area rugs which became an instant hit with the people. They now occupy a place of pride in any room where they are laid and symbolize opulence and luxury in a room.
Only wool is used in Flokati area rugs. The wool undergoes special treatment to gain a luxurious body of hair. In fact Flokati area rugs are priced based on the weight of the rug.
It is surprising to realize that wool put under rough treatment can give out a beautiful coat of hair on these rugs. Flokati rugs are initially submerged in water for 40 hours. The running water friction causes the wool to increase in volume. They are then dried under the intense heat of the sun. The dry exquisite Flokati rugs with their rich coating are then shipped to consumers all over the world.
Conventionally these rugs are of an off white color. However today it is possible to give them a new color and Flokati area rugs in a variety of colors are available in all shops. The wool used in these rugs is of premium quality and thus are able to last long.
These hand woven rugs made in Greece prefer wool from New Zealand. New Zealand wool is much in demand for these rugs owing to it being free from impurities. A genuine Flokati rug is easily recognized by its fabric and the methodology used in making it. Hindered percent pure wool and hand woven rugs are the trademarks of authentic Flokati area rugs. ‘Fake’ Flokati rugs made with synthetic material are also available today in the market.
Folkati area rugs are very easy to clean and maintain. Resistant to dirt and stain they can be easily washed with detergents at home. Use of chemicals on these rugs should however be avoided.
Folkati area rugs are far superior to any other rugs available in the market in looks and in the feel of the fabric. They add a level of sophistication to the rooms while also providing comfort. The sense of pride derived from it makes them a valuable addition to any home.
