Square Dpn
I’m new to DPN knitting in the round & I need help!?
I’m learning to knit, but all I’ve ever been able to accomplish is square/rectangle shapes (cloths, scarfs, etc.) I also used joined needles to knit a cowl in the round.
I’m trying to knit using double pointed needles, and have got the basic technique down, I think. But while I’m knitting with the ‘active’ needles, the stitches are slipping off my other needles! What am I doing wrong?
Can someone tell me the proper way to hold it so that my stitches don’t slip off? 4 – 5 active needles are a lot to keep track of!
The best way to keep stitches from sliding off the inactive needles is to always have the left tip of every needle on top of the right tip of the needle next to it. I like to work with 5 dpns on all projects – there are less ladders and it keeps less stitches on each needle – so it is less likely that any fall off.
You may be working with needles that are too short for the way that you work — some people use tiny (lenghts) needles – as short as 3 inches each. Others work with 7″ needles. If you are working on a large piece – consider changing the length of your needles – or, alternatively – switch to a circular needle.
These days I use circular needles for many different kinds of projects – from shawls where I work back and forth – there are so many stitches, to socks. When knitting something smaller – I still use a minimum 24″ circular and use either the Magic Loop or Traveling Loop methods.
