Inexpensive Ideas for Redecorating Your Room
Is your bedroom in the need of some personality? Have you been longing to make something of your eggshell walls and empty space? Decorating your room doesn’t have to be expensive, it’s all about DIY, finding the things that you already own, and repurposing them. Finger painting your mother’s new Philip Stark chairs is not what I am suggesting. But if you have a room that could stand to be induced with a little bit of creativity then there’s no reason why you should hold back. Some ideas include:
1. Painting the walls:
Painting something straight forward like a wall can actually be quite rewarding and is totally possible to do on your own. Don’t be fooled though, getting in those hard-to-reach corners without going outside of the lines has its own set of challenges! Repainting will give your room a fresh look and is a good place to start. If you feel like doing something a bit quirky try doing one or two walls in a different colour, or dip a sponge into a second colour of paint and pad it onto to your first coat.
2. Making the most of your throws:
If you’re into textiles it’s quite likely that you’ve picked up a few throughout your life. Maybe you like the ethnic prints of Bali or Mexico and grabbed a few blankets on your latest visits, or maybe you prefer something more chic like Missoni bedspreads. It’s time to pull them out of storage and start decorating your room. Use them as a runner at the end of your bed, a tablecloth, a window shade, or maybe just a blanket.
3. Making a fun skirt for your bed:
If you have a bed that sits on top of a block of wood or springs you’ll probably want to cover them up. Sure you could go to the store and buy yourself a skirt, or you could just make one yourself. A friend of mine once took big fold-out ads from a promotional fashion magazine and stapled them together to create a skirt. The colours were vibrant, the idea creative, and the result really cool.
4. Displaying your favourite items:
What makes your room yours are the things that are in it, and they extend well beyond sheet choice. Make your books visible on the shelf, stack your favourite magazines next to your bed, hang necklaces from your mirror, and line up your perfumes and nail polishes. That way when people come into your room they get a sense of who you really are. What you read, the perfume you wear, the way you’ve chosen to organize your life. Your room is personal so make it that way.
The best part about redecorating your room is that it’s fun and creative. Arts and crafts don’t have to be about knitting a scarf or bejewelling your mobile phone- recreating your space is a big undertaking with the well deserved reward of a new room.
