I have seen this technology in the CSIR Technofest 2010, showcased by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi, at India International Trade Fair during November 14-27, 2010 New Delhi, India. I understand that “Bamboo Splitting Machine” was developed by Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO), Chandigarh, India for spitting bamboo in many parts for more productivity of bamboo products and exports.
Bamboo is actually a grass and it grows to a harvestable height between 3 – 5 years. It is a wonder that some species will grow up to 2 feet per day. After harvesting, bamboo does not require replanting, it has an extensive root system that continually sends up new shoots, naturally replenishing itself, making it one of the most renewable resources known.
Due to the unique structural properties of bamboo wood, bamboos can be split to yield slivers, which are flexible longitudinal sections of wood much broader than they are wide, or split further into coarse or fine threads. Both are very verstile and can be used to produce a huge variety of products.
Many customers accept the woven bamboo products have many close associations with different cultures. There are many products of daily-use and many agricultural-use items are also woven from bamboo.
The skills for weaving with bamboo are often already existent within communities or individuals. The quality and intricacy of the product, and the low price can be attainable with this splitting machine. Quality and Design depends greatly on the skills of the weaver. This is a strong incentive for them to maintain and upgrade their skills.
People use to make products with bamboo in rural areas near to forests for their livelihood. Some of the products are exported to different parts of the world since it has unique look that people like in some regions. In countries like India, Government departments are having programmes to uplift the rural craftsmen and those crafted bamboo works will be exported to many countries. These bamboo products have more domestic markets also.
Cutting the bamboo by manually is time consuming and it will not not much accurate sizes. The idea of splitting machine make the bamboo would split into six, eight or even twelve parts by with least time. The importance of this splitting machine in many hilly regions has recognized to save the time and made accurate sizes required for the products.
Bamboo is an economic resource for sustainable development and livelihood, particularly in the North-east region. Therefore, it is considered as ‘Green Gold’. Government of India has launched a National Mission on Bamboo also. Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO), Chandigarh, in its endeavour to serve this sub-sector has successfully developed low-cost Bamboo Splitting Machine.
Bamboo splitting machine developed by CSIR, splits bamboo into six, eight or twelve equal parts radially along the length, depending upon the section and shape of the tool. Mechanization for processing of Bamboo machine will enhance the production of bamboo products and exports thereafter. The machine was kept for demonstration to make more awareness among the prople.
