Indian Knitted and Hosiery Products- A Brand Name in International Market
Rising income levels, increasing urbanization and booming retail industry are the origin of “look good and feel good” attitude. Within apparels, knitwear has become extremely popular owing to the higher degree of comfort it provides to the skin. Therefore, knitwear and hosiery products are the most important facets of India garment exports. Geared up to the international needs, Indian knitwear industry has captured many untapped markets today. It accounts for about 35 per cent of the total readymade garment exports from India. Knitted and hosiery products are the third major category of export fabric after woven and non-woven fabrics.
Indian manufacturers have made a good mark in fashion knits export because of the low priced garments available for the market worldwide. Exports of Indian knitwear are quite phenomenal since Indian exporters are able to provide comfortable, trendy and soft clothing to a huge number of consumers. Cotton knitwear today has acquired a new dimension to provide a wearer comfort and leisure in fashionable manner. The unit price of knitted garment is less than that of woven garment.
With its rich history of textile traditions and the skills of its craftsmen, India has made a foray into the tough competition where Hong Kong, Taiwan and Bangkok are leading in the export of cotton knits and hosiery. However, the quality and uniqueness offered by the Indian exporters at low price has led the country to carve a special niche for itself in the market. Knitwear products that are being exported include a wide array of list such as elegant t-shirts for men and fancy t-shirts for women with exquisite sequined work and embroidery on it, nightshirts for ladies, men’s pajama’s sets, leotards, bermudas, jackets, sportswear and jogging suits and boxer sets. The clothes are having excellent combinations, permutations and have embellishments ranging from funky prints to slogans, patches, appliqués, lace, sequins work with wooden beads, shells, hand painting and zardozi. Whether it’s a new born, a teenager or an older person, India exports knitwear that scores highest on the buyers’ lists.
Strategies for the industry
In an attempt to achieve increased productivity and improving quality to international standards, Government has launched a technological mission to cotton. On-time delivery and ability to ready large orders have given India a competitive advantage. In recent years, the productivity has shown tremendous increment with automated spreading and cutting of clothes. It was estimated that the Indian textile export industry is expected to cross $70 billion by 2014, according to a recent study. Garment industry alone constitutes 60% of the total export.
There are some major institutions such as Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC), TEXPROCIL, SITRA, TEA, SIMA, SIHMA, etc, that for the promotion assistance of the industry. Government in an integration with such agencies supports the schemes like cluster development, TUFS, subsidies, tax relief, etc. for the industry’s prosperity and growth in export market. Formation of Trade fair Complexes by Indian Government has given knitwear and hosiery a favorable brand image in international markets and provided it a better visibility among international buyers.
Indian garments are a blend of traditional art and contemporary designs. Keeping its increasing demand in view, every party such as the export units, Government, supporting institutions, and research organizations, etc., need to work together to create a better image of Indian apparels in global market thereby increasing the market share. This would also help to reduce internal hurdles and would further boost the exports in this sector.
