Spinning Wheels and Needles: Important Tools in Making Sheep Yarn
Are you afraid of needles and spinning wheels? A popular fairytale says a princess slept for a century after being pierced by a needle. She was running a spinning wheel. In reality, needles and spinning wheels are quite harmless. Needles and spinning wheels are among the most important tools in textile making.
Needles are small pieces of metal. They have three parts – the point, body, and thread holder. The point is the sharp end of a needle. It pierces through fabric and woven clothes. On the opposite end is the thread holder. The thread holder contains a small hole. It carries yarn and thread during weaving. The needle body connects the point and the thread holder. Needles have different sizes and lengths. Long and heavy needles measure 5 inches. They are used in weaving large volumes of clothes and fabric.
On the other hand, spinning wheels are used in making yarns and threads. They bind individual fibers together. These are called roving. A roving is stockpiled on the bobbin. The bobbin is connected to the drive wheel. As the treadle moves, the drive wheel combines fibers, and the roving is intertwined. After consecutive turns, the roving forms a yarn. Spinning wheels are alternative machines for spindles.
There are two kinds of spinning wheels: great wheel and treadle wheel. Great wheels are operated by hand. They are the earliest types of spinning wheels. They have a hand-maneuver wheel. This is used to move the device in a clockwise motion. Great wheels like Ashford spinning wheels have a height of over five feet. Oftentimes, they are used in spinning large volumes of wool. They are suitable for long-hand spinning technique.
Moreover, treadle wheels are run by feet. Treadle wheels are used in short-hand spinning technique. Unlike great wheels, treadle wheels enable weavers to use hands in controlling threads. There are two classes of treadle wheels, the double-drive and single-drive wheels. A double-drive Ashford spinning wheel requires long hours of upright sitting affront the wheel. This helps the spinner to operate the wheels.
Needles are placed on the spinning wheel. They make different kinds of thread like Brown Sheep yarn. Needles and spinning wheels are necessary in weaving and stitching fabric.
